About - us

Barbican Research Associates Limited was set up by Hilary Cool, Jerry Evans, Peter Guest, Quita Mould and Stephanie Rátkai to provide an integrated post-excavation service. Between us we have well over 100 years of experience of post-excavation work ranging from prehistory to post-medieval archaeology. We are all senior figures in our areas of expertise, publish widely and are experienced project managers.

Hilary Cool works mainly with small finds and vessel glass of the Roman period. She has just completed a  long running project exploring Roman glass bottles. She managed the assessment and analysis stages of our Staffordshire Hoard research project.

Jerry Evans is a pottery specialist working mainly with Roman material.

Peter Guest is an archaeologist and archaeological numismatist specialising in the Roman period.  He has organised and run several large-scale research and training excavations and other fieldwork projects, and has identified many coin hoards and site-find assemblages for museums and contracting units in the UK and Europe.

Quita Mould works with small finds and has a special expertise in metalwork and leather. She works across periods, providing specialist reports on assemblages from excavations  throughout Britain, contributing to collaborative articles, themed volumes and, occasionally, editing conference proceedings.

Stephanie Rátkai is a pottery specialist who works with material of post-Roman to early modern date.  She managed our Birmingham Archaeology Digital Archive project.
